Hourly vs Flat Rate House Cleaning: Which Offers Better Value?

Understanding cleaning prices helps you choose the right service for your home, budget and long-term maintenance needs.

When booking professional house cleaning, you'll usually encounter two pricing methods: hourly rates and flat rates.

Both have advantages. The best choice depends on your property's condition, cleaning priorities and service requirements.

At My VIP Cleaning Service, we primarily use hourly pricing for regular home cleaning, while fixed quotes may be more suitable for certain one-off services.

What's the Difference?

Flexible Cleaning

Hourly Rate

You pay based on the agreed total cleaning labour hours.

  • Flexible cleaning priorities
  • Adjustable maintenance plans
  • Control over booked cleaning time
  • Suitable for regular cleaning
Defined Cleaning Scope

Flat Rate

You receive a fixed quote for an agreed scope of work.

  • Agreed price before cleaning
  • Defined tasks and inclusions
  • Greater certainty over total cost
  • Suitable for many one-off jobs

Neither pricing method is automatically cheaper or better. The right choice depends on the work involved.

Why Hourly Cleaning Works for Regular Homes

Every household is different.

A three-bedroom home occupied by two adults may need less cleaning time than a similar property with children, pets or heavier daily use.

Hourly cleaning allows the service to reflect how your home is actually used, rather than relying on bedroom numbers alone.

  • Flexible priorities: Focus on areas needing the most attention.
  • Budget control: Agree on a practical cleaning duration.
  • Adaptable service: Adjust tasks as household needs change.
  • Transparent calculations: Understand how labour hours are counted.
Better value doesn't always mean the lowest price.

It means using your cleaning budget effectively through realistic time estimates, clear priorities and consistent results.

How Our Cleaning Planner Adds More Value

At My VIP Cleaning Service, we believe regular cleaning should be more than repeating the same checklist every visit.

Our Cleaning Planner approach helps clients make better use of their booked cleaning time.

We consider your home's layout, frequently used areas, cleaning priorities and preferred service frequency.

More Than Cleaning. A Plan for Your Home.

For weekly or fortnightly clients, we combine essential regular cleaning with planned, rotating detail work.

  • Maintain bathrooms, kitchens and floors as agreed priorities.
  • Plan selected tasks such as internal windows, cupboards and window tracks.
  • Review priorities as your home's condition and needs change.

The goal is consistent home maintenance, not rushing through every task in one visit.

This structured approach helps your home stay better maintained over time while making more effective use of your regular cleaning hours.

How Do We Calculate Cleaning Hours?

At My VIP Cleaning Service, cleaning hours are calculated per cleaner.

2 Cleaners × 1.5 Hours = 3 Labour Hours Total chargeable labour time: 3 hours
2 Cleaners × 2 Hours = 4 Labour Hours Total chargeable labour time: 4 hours

For a well-maintained three-bedroom, two-bathroom home, we may recommend approximately 3–4 total labour hours, depending on the property's layout, condition and cleaning priorities.

This is equivalent to two cleaners working approximately 1.5–2 hours each.

These are estimates rather than guarantees that every task will be completed within a specific time.

Cleaning duration and priorities should be agreed in advance. Any additional time should be discussed and approved before proceeding.

When Is Flat Rate Cleaning a Better Choice?

While hourly pricing works well for regular cleaning, fixed quotes can be more suitable for certain one-off services.

  • End-of-lease cleaning
  • Pre-sale property cleaning
  • Clearly defined deep cleaning projects
  • Other one-off cleaning services

A fixed quote provides greater certainty over the agreed total price.

Clients should understand what's included, what's excluded and whether additional charges may apply if the property's condition differs significantly from the original information provided.

How Many Cleaning Hours Does Your Home Need?

Bedroom count is only one part of estimating cleaning time.

We also consider:

  • Bathrooms and frequently used rooms
  • Single-storey or double-storey layout
  • Number of occupants and pets
  • Current condition of the property
  • Cleaning priorities and service frequency

First-time cleaning may require additional time to address built-up dirt and areas that haven't been maintained regularly.

Once your home reaches a consistent maintenance standard, the cleaning schedule can be reviewed and adjusted.

Working with a preferred budget?

We can prioritise essential areas first and plan lower-priority tasks across future visits where suitable.
